How can I know that I am truly saved?

简答 Short Answer

Assurance of salvation comes from three sources: God's promises (Scripture), the Holy Spirit's inner witness (inner conviction), and the fruit of life (behavioral change).

Detailed Answer

Assurance of salvation is something every Christian should and can have. John wrote 1 John so 'that you may know that you have eternal life' (1 John 5:13).

**Three pillars of assurance:**

1. **God's promises in Scripture**: The Bible gives clear promises. 'To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God' (John 1:12). If you genuinely trust Christ, God's Word guarantees your salvation. This doesn't depend on your feelings but on God's faithful promises.

2. **The Holy Spirit's inner witness**: 'The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God' (Romans 8:16). The Holy Spirit dwells in believers, giving us an inner assurance — an intimacy that cries 'Abba! Father!'

3. **The fruit of life**: True faith bears fruit. Do you have a new sensitivity to sin? A hunger for God's Word? A love for other believers? Have you experienced inner transformation? These are signs of life change (1 John 3:14).

**On doubt:** Occasional doubt doesn't mean you're unsaved. Faith and doubt can coexist (Mark 9:24). Satan often attacks believers' assurance. When you doubt, return to God's Word and hold onto His promises rather than relying on your feelings.

The Westminster Confession states: 'This infallible assurance may take time and effort to attain, but this does not prevent a true believer from being truly saved before achieving such assurance.'
